Christmas tree two for one

We decorated our tree tonight- just in time to participate in Morning Glory's Christmas Tree Treasures. NCS asked us about our favorite ornaments and now that the tree is up, I can finally play along there, too. Matt's family had a tradition where they each received a new ornament every year and he took his with him when we got married. We're carrying on that tradition, but we've only been doing it for 6 years. I don't have many real favorites or standouts, but it's fun to remember why we got each one. I'm looking forward to placing them 10 or 30 years from now.

Here's our tree, followed by a few of the ornaments that really make me smile when we unpack them.
I'm still in search of the perfect topper. I have an idea in my mind of the ideal silver star, but haven't found it yet. You can barely see that we're using a large silver bow. It seemed like we were putting lights on forever and packing them relatively close, but it was only 4 strands by the time we reached the bottom. As always, I don't think we have enough lights.

This was Howie's ornament last year. It doesn't have a whole lot of meaning behind it other than he has a stuffed sock monkey that he was fond of making out with in his first year. It used to have a bow on its neck, but he loved this one too and dragged it around for all of December last year.

Matt made this star with his dad when he was little. It says "Matt's star 81" on it, which means he was handed a block of wood and a saw at the ripe old age of 4. I think it's cute and Matt has fond memories of making it. It topped our tree for the first few years when we only had a little 3 foot table top fake one.

This is the ornament from Matt's first Christmas. That means it's almost 30 years old. I love how simple it is, but mostly I love it because no one in my family has anything like it.

My sister gave us this the day we brought Howie home from the hospital. It kind of makes me giggle in the deformed three headed baby sense, but I also get a little choked up. It was the first ornament we put on our tree that year. We bought official "first Christmas" ones by Lenox (one for Howie to take and one for us to keep), but this is the one that makes me remember that first Christmas with him.

my apologies for the poor image quality, but the camera was beeping that the batteries were dying. I had to be quick and I'm just glad that I was able to upload them before it died.

I love that sock monkey!
That's it, I'm just going to have to buy me one.

...ornaments that really make me smile when we unpack them, that's when you know what Christmas is all about. I agree with lei, this is a history rich tree.
To have your husband's childhood ornaments is a true treasure.

Thanks for playing along Val :)

Val, your tree is beautiful! I love the rich stories behind the ornaments. I think I am the same age as Matt.

We should start a sock monkey club! I am so wanting one on my tree!

I love all the pictures of the ornaments!!!
I have ornaments from my childhood, too. My grandparents gave us 1 each year as well. Kinda cool to see "Sheri 1974" (good hell, I'm old)
I've bought us a family ornament each year since we've been married, and each child gets 1 each year as well. (well, 2...1 from me and 1 from my mom and dad) I love the mixmatched trees!

The sock monkey is my favorite. We had sock monkeys to play with when we were little. Everyone should, don't you think? :) I loved that Howie would "make out" with his. What do you think that means for the future?
