a conundrum

As I have mentioned, Howie loves Pooh. We have an old vhs copy of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and a nearly equally as old vcr. Sometimes it rewinds, sometimes it doesn't. The tape squeals while it is playing. If you watch closely for too long, you're likely to get motion sickness from the waves running through the picture. Yet, we watch it almost daily.

The dvd is out of print, so after watching ebay and being outbid four times in a row, I put a ridiculously high bid on the next copy coming up. It claimed to be new and sealed and ended up being an okay price. It was coming from the UK, so it took awhile to ship and finally came while we were on vacation. Howie watched it part of the way on Wednesday night, twice yesterday and once today. I love not having to rewind it, or fast forward through the 20 minutes of previews. It's so much more convenient and the quality is uncomparable to our old copy.

The problem? It's obviously bootleg. From the tiny bit of something crusty on the back of the gold colored disc to the fact that the cover was put in upside down and the case didn't have the Disney seal on the end. I was watching for signs that it might be because after I put in my bid, I researched the seller a bit more closely. I know, I know- I should have done that before bidding. In fact, I had done that before bidding a few days earlier, but in my desperation to actually win a bid, forgot that I had ruled that seller out.

Now what? Should I complain to the seller? Do I have any recourse through ebay? Will I have to mail it back to the UK? Will I get refunded my shipping costs?

or- keep a working dvd of Howie's favorite show that came at a decent price?

what to do, what to do?

I'd return it just because of the crusty thing...eeew! Only after you get a replacement, though. You might have some recourse through eBay, but I think you would have better results filing a complaint with Paypal (if you paid through Paypal) since they can hold the money until the dispute is resolved, or refund it.

Nice - bootleg copy? They couldn't cough up an actually-paid-for copy?

I agree with ABC Momma. That crusty thing solves the whole problem. Give the seller a crappy rating while you're at it.

If you have to return it and pay postage to do so, I'd probably just keep it and chalk it up as a lesson learned.

You could post about it on the bargain board over at BabyCenter. Those women know EVERYTHING Ebay.

maybe bootleg was the wrong word. unauthorized reproduction is probably more accurate. The fact that we can't get it to play in our computers sealed its fate. I'm sure we'll want to take it on a trip at some point.

Thats a tough one. The evil me says keep it, but just reading your comment, I'd say send it back or chuck it. If it don't work on a lap top, whats the point

oooo...I don't envy you the choice! It's a modern noram dilemma...so, can you bootleg a copy of the bootlegged copy and THEN complain and send back? Or is that too many wrongs to make a right? Hm.

Thanks for visiting the blog! Hope you come round again!
